Much like whisky, our courses have been expertly crafted by a passionate team ready to hand their understanding of the world of Scotch whisky over to you.
The courses have been designed to accommodate those looking to expand their understanding of Scotland's national drink. Whether you’re a professional working with spirits in the hospitality sector, or a whisky fan looking to refine your knowledge and host your own whisky tastings at home, we’ll have the right course for you.
The Whisky Ambassador - One Day Course
A one-day immersive experience giving you everything you need to know about whisky.
- We’ll start way back at the beginning, taking a look at the history of whisky; where it originated, how it has evolved over the years, and what is happening in the industry today.
- You’ll learn the differences between Single Malts, Single Grain Scotch and Blends and be given an overview of the whisky production process; from malting through to maturation.
- You’ll be taught the differences in the production, flavours and aromas of peated and unpeated whisky.
- With an introduction to mixers and cocktails, sales and customer service, you’ll gain the skills to confidently direct customers to a whisky that will suit their tastes.
- The practical element of the course will give you a chance to show off your new found whisky knowledge. Sample four whiskies and pick out the key notes and qualities.

The Whisky Ambassador Advanced Course
Take your whisky knowledge to the next level with The Whisky Ambassador three day advanced course.
- You’ll be taken back to basics and given the full grain to glass experience; an in-depth, comprehensive look at the process of how Scotch whisky is made. We’ll look at how esters are formed during fermentation, before taking a deep dive into what happens during the complex process of distillation.
- Around 80% of flavour comes from the cask in which the whisky is matured. You’ll learn about the different types of casks and how they can influence the flavour of the whisky they hold.
- You can’t become a whisky aficionado without knowing how to nose and taste! Using a whisky wheel, we’ll take you through the steps needed to help you pick out the different notes found in whiskies.
- Our advanced course includes an experiential element. The experience varies from course to course. Previous groups have indulged in bespoke tasting dinners at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society; visited world renowned distilleries such as Glengoyne; and seen what it’s like behind the scenes at a commercial maltster. Whisky experiences vary by area.
